Ceebo – the name of the font – mould of the first-drawn characters whose nature should shape the rest of the font; the font-construction started 2009 at the Fachhochschule Potsdam.


Wärend der Arbeit an einer SchrDuring the creation of fonts you will get more graphical sensitiveness and more respect to every letter. It was interesting to understand that not just each type, also each glyph has to solve its own specific typographic job. So i tried to look at this by working on each individual glyph. Here a detail, there a cut etc.  Maybe after thousands of copies and several variants of glyphs i get a font which is consitent and also flexible. The most issues I had with the much ligatures and alternative-variants, because they multiply the amount of work.

Ceebo is a friendly sans-serif, which show some aspects of a humanist and grotesque typeface. The font was inspired by fonts like Meta or Luc(as) de Groots Corpid. It retained more details of writing and got some forms and characteristics of an italic. The font was designed to stay legible also in small sizes: beside as possible open counters, a tall x-high, distinct vents and cuts, it especially are the details of the glyphs which make it discernable. The ”regular” is slightly thinner than other sans-serif fonts, moreover the diacritics and small glyphs were designed for small sizes by taller and more open forms. The arising ”ruggedness” will be mellowed by half-rounded stems and pointed stemends. The Family make it possible to use the font in different ways, for small-size text and also huge headines.


The font contains some alternativ glyphs. It also contains some ligatures and discretionary ligatures (some of which are disable in OpenType-Feature). Futhermore there are adjusted figures and additional character for uppercase letters, lowercase letters and small caps, which react by OpenType-Featured. Ceebo has diacritics of the latin 1, some of the extendet-A, Baltic, Central Europe and Turkish. All OpenType-Features are build for Indesign and Illustrator. Type is fully kerned (with sense :]) and  containrd a ”basic-hinting”. In the next Steps I like build out the diacritics for more countries (leastwise polnish can be write). A problem will be to keep the kerning as much as necessary but as few as possible. I need information what kerning pairs really never rub shoulders with each other. FontLab is open to make all italic Pairs. Now, the font contained six weights: Regular, Book, Semibold, Bold, Extrabold and Black.

    fast schon unheimlich wie gut die schrift konstruiert ist und wieviele otf-features sie hat! :-)

    eine anmerkungen hätte ich allerdings noch:
    -> die übergänge der ligaturen (‘qu’, ‘ck’, ‘sp’ etc.) sind sehr dünn, zu dünn für meinen geschmack bei einer ansonsten sehr gleichmäßigen humanistischen sans. ähnliches dann auch beim ‘Q.swash’.
    beim ‘e’ (und ampersand.alt2) sowie ‘a’ könnte der horizontale strich auch etwas dicker (zumindest vor dem übergang in den stamm) gerade wenn man ihn mit andern horizontalen biegungen vergleicht (wie z.b ‘n’).
