How great digital networking might be – simply talking via Skype does not make one happy. So Timo board the train in Wismar and got off in Kiel. And that is how the 4½ days of type session started …
After a couple of researches and exchanges in advance the following idea is stressed: Let’s do something chic – a geometric typeface, fast to realize, in terms off current Zeitgeist with some distinctive alternate letters. The decision for geometric upper case combined with aesthetic slick crowd-pleaser is quickly taken to grant actual output in such short time and uncomplicated work-flow for two heads simultaneous working on one typeface.
Some inspiration for possible character variations come along by analysing Art-Déco typefaces which can be – geometrically shortened to the fundamental idea of the letter – transformed into a nice contemporary font. Furthermore the strong reduced and straight lined shapes of runes do expand the repertoire of alternate glyphs.
Pushed by lots of hot lemon drink with some slices ginger, construction of the glyphs started in Illustrator with a detailed grid. The basic proportions and shapes were derived from common grotesque faces, but slightly intensified.
The result is a geometric basis-font with a classical humanistic proportion-system, which – despite template – bears up by complete independent and extravagant shapes.
A dish of self-made pesto afterwards: The sketched alternate letters were vectorised. Best two matching variants were chosen and implemented as open-type stylistic alternates .
In spite of the intense geometric charme of the font, some glyphs were balanced in FontLab and the whole font was revised by a slightly contrast in stroke. So the mathematical construction in Illustrator is adapted to visual perception of a typeface.
Finally the not expanded vector lines were converted from normal to hairline and interpolated afterwards: four weights are ready to use.
Currently the »TJ Evolette« – sliced into a variant with extreme extended gylphs »TJ Evolette E« and a variant with two sets of alternate glyphs »TJ Evolette A« – is into progress of adding punctuation, special characters and diacritical marks plus kerning and preparing for distribution via MyFonts respectively a presentation on 26+.
